A variety from Tuscany, Italy where it is grown extensively. The tree is of strong vigour with dense foliage. Although the branchlets are small they are very flexible and pendulous. The leaves are bright green above and grey green below, lanceolate and of medium size.
Frantoio is best planted alongside other varieties to assist in pollination. A very productive tree with oval elongated fruit averaging in weight of above 2 grams. In recent times Frantoio has lost some of its popularity to other earlier fruiting varieties. This is unfortunate as it is a strong hardy tree, growing equally well in both cool and warm areas.
The oil of Frantoio is high in quality with a strong flavour.
